Even compared to the suffering over the last 20 years, the people of Gaza and the West Bank are enduring horrific trauma. Around a quarter of a million people may have died – nobody knows the true numbers – but certainly, it is a lot higher than the media reports.
This means that everyone has lost a parent, a child, a sibling, a relative or a friend in this unprecedented onslaught. There is killing going on with an industrial scale. This killing is planned to exterminate the Palestinian people. This is not self defence in reaction to the 7th October, 2023. This is genocide. Cold, calculated, purposeful genocide.
The people of Gaza cannot believe that the world is watching this happen. They only see the actions of governments, on all sides, who have not shown the courage to describe this as genocide and come to their aid.
Despite their amazing resilience, being abandoned by the rest of the world gives a sense of hopelessness. There is no apparent future for the children of Gaza and the West Bank.
Their morale can be lifted by you. You can tell them that the governments in the east and west may not care but the populations do. The governments are not representative of the people. By sending them pictures of the crowds at demonstrations, and conversing with them, you can remind them that they are not alone, and we stand with them. This is an important role for us, and negates the perception that we are powerless and cannot do anything to help.
